When I was more active in transportation advocacy in YVR I found it incredibly frustrating to fight the same fights all over again.
But I did not actually fight these fights myself in Germany, I was a kid and others fought them for me. So yeah, I should suck it up and get more involved again.

The analogy is not perfect, there are elements where Vancouver is further along than German cities were back then. But there is also a lot of parts where Vancouver is still behind how things were when I walked and biked to school in Germany.

More broadly, I think national statistics agencies need to let go of the idea that they are just “providing representative data” and embrace the fact that most of their products are the output of models and they need to be explicit (and thoughtful) about underlying assumptions about the DGP.

This is measured in the census, and this dataset presents inter- and extrapolated estimates based on 2016 and 2021 results. Which seems to fail to pay attention to the DGP and how e.g. university having remote classes during the 2020/2021 school year impacts estimates.

This is classifying dwelling units. The target estimand is homes occupied by people who (all) have their usual place of residence elsewhere. In practice a big chunk of that is college students who return to their parents’ place during summer break and are coded as living with their parents.

Noticing that I am getting increasingly cynical. I am comfortably housed, maybe I should stop caring and sit back, get out the popcorn, and watch the show of AI-driven approval systems meant to speed things up battle AI powered objection systems designed to slow things down.

Traditional Japanese travel style is to take thousands of photos during the trip, and then the real vacation is relaxing at home in a comfy seat and slowly flip through the photos.

I think it’s a fairly niche issue, but some people feel very strongly about this.

Right on, someone trained it well in the nomenclature culture wars that actually matter. It’s called the heat equation and physicists should stop pretending otherwise.

No hard height limit that I know of. But everything is a building by building negotiation and council and planners basically won’t consider buildings taller than the current tallest one. So the burbs now built taller than the central city.

I dunno, much higher priority is to allow low and mid rise much more broadly. But beggars can’t be choosers, so I take what I can get.
