I made veggie croquettes with powdered sugar instead of potato starch. Unholy.

That said, one could take an action that is meant to create meaning by/for the actor--that is, "performative" in the original sense-- but can be read as fake or insincere by others, thereby getting labeled "performative" (in the popular, misunderstood sense) by others.

We have terms for behavior meant to signal certain values/affiliations: conspicuous, dramatic, false, intentionally misleading, for the 'gram, etc.. "Performative" should be reserved for actions that are executed to actually make real change/meaning, not just signal it.

Somewhere along the way, "performative" has come to mean over-the-top, showy, insincere, and inherently false, when that is exactly the *opposite* of what Butler meant: performing something (esp. repeatedly) is what makes it real and meaningful. And it drives me absolutely crackers.

Later in the '80s Judith Butler took the idea to discuss how gender is not innate, steady, or universally understood, but is instead based on the repeated *performance* of a culture's *ideas* of gender. Performing masculinity or femininity is what creates gender / makes you masculine/feminine.

In the '80s, Richard Schechner talked about the overlap between ritual and performance as "twice-behaved behavior" (something that is repeated, either by an individual or within a culture) that is meant not just to mark a change, but to *create* that change. Think of any religious or cultural rite.

I will do my best to be brief. "Performative/ity/ness" is comes from Austin's speech act theory of the early 1960s, to discuss how saying something can be *doing* something: I promise; I command; I thee wed, etc..

This is my #2 fight. (#1 is against "performative" as "fake or empty posturing."

I mix up powder from washing soda, baking soda, and sodium perchlorate. Works great, cheap AF on a per-use basis.

Easier to program your programmers if they've never bothered to think about anything but algorithms.

That's why we bought fruit leather strips and Kind bars. We had 3 kids total. Not even the kids next door.

I was really hoping for your take on Cesar's 2013 "It's My Life." The song isn't creepy, but the staging! Opera Dracula, with demonic dancers, from ROMANIA??? youtu.be/OV3xp5ZXSYA?...
