In fact, we are going backward. We only need to look to the US to see hard-fought progress being reversed. This year’s CSW theme is “For All Women and Girls – Equality. Rights. Empowerment", and it couldn't be more timely. 💪

It's great to raise awareness of this important topic, but it must be caveated by highlighting the associated risks. Not everyone has the autonomy to act on this advice safely. (3/3)

The advice on how to protect yourself doesn't take into consideration the victim's ability, freedom & space to take these actions. Opening a separate bank account, making copies of important documents, contacting #domesticviolence support centres can all increase your risk of danger. (2/3)

[2/3] The fact that multiple women reported Harkins' manipulative and controlling behaviour, only to feel "dismissed" is deeply concerning. This highlights the need for comprehensive training and awareness within our police forces to identify & respond effectively to all forms of domestic abuse.

Proposed rulemaking such as that by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the #UnitedStates is very welcome.

"Issue of 'coerced debt' warrants rulemaking activity with the expectation that abuse survivors will experience significant increases to their credit scores."
