UPDATE: Village of Skokie officials say Friday's massive water main break appears to be the result of "a fitting cap on a major water transmission main" failing.

They say the failure does not appear to be related to construction work in the area @nbcchicago.com

Skokie water main break still being worked on this morning. I’m told crews found source of problem shortly after midnight. Best case scenario - water will be restored in about 6 hours. Worst case it will be another day according to crews on site @nbcchicago
