Blackbirds of the Pacific Northwest

A little overview of the blackbird family members that make an appearance in the western US! The variation in colors and sizes is always surprising to me. I also often forget Meadowlarks are a new world Blackbird and not a lark at all!

Woodpeckers of The Pacific Northwest

Digital illustration highlighting the 12 species of woodpeckers most common here in the upper right US! Had a lot of fun drawing these guys, especially the Lewis' Woodpecker. Their colors are stunning.

How many of these species have you seen?

In a quiet understory brimming with trillium, sorrel, and sword fern, a Northern Spotted Owl surveys her home: the Ancient Woods. The stars shine love on her silent wings as she alights from her perch, a shimmer of feathers soar-sparkling over this wholly irreplaceable habitat.

Like hidden mycelium feeling their way through soil for nourishment, we are at our most powerful when we create vast communication networks, pool our strength, and RISE ABOVE to fruit and flourish.

"Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow."
An American Kestrel lands among a flutter of rare Fender's Blue Butterflies. This fleeting moment passes in a shimmering breeze as butterfly and bird fly off across what’s left of their ever-dwindling ancestral home.

"The Observer 2". Graphite.

While drawing this I thought a lot about the ways we find and hold on to hope, and how powerful it can be to carry us through times of uncertainty and grief.

We need our hope more than ever these days.

Hold on.

Physically I'm stuck in 2025, living through a twisted oligarchic remake of groundhog day. Mentally I'm thousands of feet above the world again, hiking through meadows of giant beargrass, entirely alone in blissful solitude.

Take care of yourselves today.

California Condors remind me that there are uncountable reasons for protecting the natural world, and love is as good of a reason as any.
