Welcome to my inaugural “Times I have been scared by my own Halloween decorations” count! Today’s entry is this spooky guy:

This excerpt talking about fundamentalist attacks on Southern Baptist seminaries in the 1980s mirrors the same kind of attacks happening at universities across the US today!
Excerpt from “The Fundamentalist Takeover in the Southern Baptist Convention”: Paul Pressler, Paige Patterson, and others claimed the seminaries were infiltrated with "liberalism," and that many professors did not believe the Bible. Biblical inerrancy became the issue by which to mobilize the grassroots. "Get rid of the liberals in the seminaries" was the rallying cry to pull people to the annual meeting of the SBC and elect a president who could turn the tide. And it worked. All the seminaries came under siege. Fundamentalist students were enlisted to spy and report on professors. In 1984 Patterson said the Criswell Center was archiving specific instances of her-esy: "Any time these people talk, we have someone there listening and sending us tapes.” Southeastern Seminary professor Alan Neely, now professor of missions at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey, was questioned by an SBC watchdog group about statements he supposedly made in class, statements he says he did not make. Neely commented, "It has now become open season on seminary professors.... We have been marginalized and, in many respects, slandered.”
