Inspiring women of Kenya. When F was 10, her father arranged her marriage to an older man. Distraught, F went to her teacher who intervened. F went to college and is now a safari guide. She is married with two kids and a trailblazer for working moms in her area.

Lenkisiau means big black mane. He’s part of a coalition of 3 male lions in a pride of 20 in the Naboisho Conservancy in Kenya. Naboisho means come together and the Maasai work with tourism and conservationists so animals and humans can live together peacefully.

I love seeing leopards when doing wildlife research because they are so elusive. This beauty named Spot had hunted a gazelle’s baby and the gazelle mama waited hours for her baby to return from the bush where it was dragged. Community conservation efforts in Kenya are helping endangered leopards.

Elephant herds are led by the oldest and largest females called matriarchs. They protect, guide, and teach the young. Elephants in Kenya are endangered due to poaching, climate change, and human-animal conflict. Community led conservation is helping.

Rhinos are poached for their horns and are quickly going extinct. Namibia hosts the largest population of black rhinos in the world due to successful conservation efforts that involves local communities.

The ancient people of NM were gifted astronomers and architectural engineers. Working at a dig in the area, I learned their buildings represent sacred landscapes aligned to the sun & moon cycles. Fajada butte contains a spiral aligned with the solstices.

Elephants are empathetic, mourn their dead, caress each other, and recognize individuals in their herds through unique vocalizations. Due to poaching and habitat loss, African elephants have decreased 60% the last 50 years.

Cheetahs don’t roar, but meow. Male cheetahs form coalitions of 2-3. There are less than 6,000 cheetahs in the world. As apex hunters they are important for their ecosystems.

Meet Namunyak, which means the lucky one. She’s fast, a good hunter & enjoys naps in the shade with her son. Cheetah populations are down from 100,000 in 1900 to less than 7,100 now. Conservation models that benefit locals are changing that.

Namibia’s giraffe population is growing due to effective conservation, but faces threats from habitat loss, illegal hunting, and droughts. Worldwide, giraffe populations are declining.
Giraffes live in groups called towers and moms form nursery groups to care for their young.

Vuba was the silverback of the Mtn gorilla group I visited. There are only 1,063 Mtn gorillas left. In 1965, when Dian Fossey began studying them there were only 200. Thx to conservation efforts their numbers continue to slowly rise. #gorillas #Rwanda #naturephotography #conservation
