I have friends in Gaza who have somehow managed to keep their pets alive through two years of famine. What else d we expect people to do? They're members of the family - and they have a big role to play in providing psychological support at times of extreme stress.

I find it odd that this (otherwise good) article never once mentions seaweed. We live on an island; it's cheap and easily accessible. My favourite Japanese snacking seaweed carries a warning against eating multiple packs per day because of the risk of getting too much iodine that way.

A sycamore seed took root in my parents' garden when I was about two. By the time I was ten, it was three times my height and really strong, a great climbing tree. It had a really good branch where I often used to sit and read or collect aphids for frogs I was raising.
