Utah: I am selling my Rad City 3 Commuter E-Bike.

~900 miles, used very lightly, stored indoors, charged indoors, and in great shape. Can remove stickers, can deliver. $850 OBO.

It’s a very fun bike! I just don’t use it anymore.

Daylight savings and a crocus spotting today. We’ve made it through winter ❤️

All you can do is laugh. What nonsense.

We don’t even have to pretend we want women in the economy any more!!! #utleg

1) This is so racist.

2) Implying that child care struggles in the U.S. aren’t serious, despite clear evidence that they are, is insulting to all the parents and providers struggling.

There used to be a world where this sort of behavior wasn’t tolerated by legislative leadership. Now it is supported and empowered. Despicable.

8/ When all taxes are considered, Utah’s system is already regressive—lower income households pay a higher share of their income in taxes than the wealthiest.

Some lawmakers want Utah to follow Texas—no income tax, but sky-high property taxes & one of the most unfair tax systems.
March 7, 2025 at 12:02 AM
6/ Meanwhile, the required property tax for school funding has skyrocketed—up 52% from 2014 to 2024.

The Utah Legislature increased the property tax rate districts must charge, forcing communities to shoulder more of the burden while lawmakers keep cutting income taxes.

3/ Right now, Utah spends LESS per student than any other state. Our effort to fund education is slipping. While state income tax revenue for schools has stayed flat since the Great Recession, local property tax revenue shot up 29% (2014-2024).

A joy of Session: meeting Mr. Rosso from Freak and Geeks!

Y’all probably didn’t even know there’s a celebrity in our presence at the Capitol. His real name is Dave, and he’s just an active community member who cares about kids and marginalized communities.

New blog from me and my colleague, Taylor Throne:
With Income Tax Cuts, Property Taxes Fill the Gap

The Legislature has raised required property tax contributions, reducing the share of school funding covered by income taxes. #utleg

SB 221 was voted down last night.

This bill would have safeguarded children too young to speak or express when they’re unsafe, yet lawmakers chose to reject it. These are our most vulnerable kids.

Take note of who voted against. #utleg

On SB 37: "That means state lawmakers could pay schools back with income tax funds, an account that lawmakers can only use for education and certain social services...Hauber called it “washing” money." #utleg

I was never crazy about this child care certification bill, but it is wild to see a bill fly through the process unanimously, only to be killed for no reason and with no public opposition. Almost like...retribution.

You won't catch me defending the Social Security tax cut, but I also think calling it morally wrong when you support the general tax cut (aka this) is inconsistent. #utleg

This piece doesn’t need to pit child welfare against school lunch but that’s really not the larger point - the writer is exactly right.

I'm trying to write a description of a bill that was already a politically palatable public-private, non-subsidy childcare bill-that was watered down further by the House:
🔹cut out low-income kids
🔹charge full rent, removing half the incentive to participate
🔹remove discounted tuition

6/ National experts say UT’s CTC is among the most restrictive nationwide. Even when expanded by HB316, no families will receive the full $1,000 credit.

New sub uses transient room tax revenue to fund the child tax and business tax credit. Never seen this before…

FWIW child care advocates didn’t ask for this. Seems like a smoke and mirrors way to plug budget gaps from the last 4 tax cuts.

Make no mistake. The ultimate goal of lawmakers is income tax elimination: utahchildren.org/newsroom/spe...

We've been yelling this from the rooftops, but it sounds so irresponsible that many people don't believe us. Believe them when they say what they will do.

Interestingly during committee, a member said the quiet part out loud: "Doesn't the Executive Appropriations Committee make a determination, no matter if we pass this or not?" They've already decided. The hearings are theater.

A less discussed component of the cumulative 5 tax cuts:
🔹94.5% of these tax savings go to out-of-state corporations
🔹Only 5.5% benefits Utah-based businesses

This shift reduces funding available for essential state programs and fails to meaningfully support local businesses. #utleg

It seems like a good day to remind everyone that vouchers aren't just an irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars; they have terrible outcomes for students.

The impact of vouchers on student outcomes is comparable to, or even worse than, a natural disaster or pandemic. #utleg
