We went through it in 2007 to 2008. Some consulates were pretty slow, but I think for most people, it was under 2 years.

I'm sure it is much worse now.

I mean, if the idea is that the whole thing happens in 90 days, that was never reality.

To be fair, it was ALWAYS a very time-consuming process, although how much time depended on which US processing center you went through for you I 129 F (Vermont was faster than California) and which consulate for the actual visa. Ours took about 8 months.
