World Read Aloud Day is 2/25/25!!! 🥳 📚 🎈 WRAD is an annual celebration of sharing stories & promoting literacy around the world. Some authors offer free 15-20 min virtual school visits during which they read aloud to students & discuss their love of books.

Willa rose to her feet and ambled toward the fire. “But most importantly,” she continued, her back to her audience, “they said the ghost wears a long scarf that’s red as blood.” She spun around and unzipped her jacket to reveal a strip of red beneath. With the light of the fire at her back, her hair and eyes were as dark as the picture she had painted. Screams rang out into the night. “And every year thereafter,” Willa continued, “at least one camper claims to have seen the ghost hovering high among the treetops, seeking revenge upon the unwanted guests on her family’s estate. That’s each. And every. One. Of. You.” Willa’s voice, which had grown deep and ominous, softened to a whisper. “So heed the rules and stay away from the forest. For you are not wanted here.”

“About seven years ago,” Willa continued, “the body of the last Rhee daughter, Min-Young, was found in the forest with the same long red silk scarf. With no remaining heirs, the new owners of the estate decided the best use of the scene of a murder was a youth camp.” This earned Willa a few snickers. “But during the first Camp Foster summer, half the kids left early. Though reports blamed unfortunate food poisoning, several of the kids involved claimed Min-Young haunts the forest surrounding Camp Foster and demanded they leave. They say she wears a long white dress and that her stringy black hair” —Willa used her fingers to comb her shoulder-length red hair down over her eyes— “drapes over her face so you can just barely make out her coal-black eyes watching you from behind it.”

“Although the Rhee family kept a low profile, they were well known for three things. One: Their entire wealth, including the estate, was handed down through their daughters. Two: Each heir was mysteriously killed, and their killers were never caught. And three”—Willa leaned in and dropped her voice—“the bodies of every murdered Rhee woman were found with a long red silk scarf wrapped loosely—and dare I say fashionably—around their necks. But there were no signs of physical injury, no clue as to how they died. And while those scarves are undeniably related to the murder or murderer, their purpose remains a mystery.”

“It’s time for a ghost story.” Willa took a seat on a stump facing the campers and cleared her throat. When all was quiet except the hiss and crackle of the campfire, she began. “You’ve all seen Rhee Manor. Some of you have even been inside.” Willa’s voice, at first light and easy, turned dark and heavy. “But did you know that not one, not two, not even three, but six members of the Rhee family were killed? In fact, one murder took place right on these grounds. That’s right. Camp Foster was built on the Rhee family estate after the last heir of the family fortune was murdered in the forest that looms around us.”
