Wisconsinite. Teacher (high school English turned middle school reading intervention). I spend most of my free time reading, cooking, and traveling.
My husband's rugby team adopted ten families with thirty total kids, and all the presents are being kept at my house. Help me.

This is a major problem with being a teacher.

I had that reaction when a podcast referred to a 40 year old as middle aged. Accurate, perhaps, but I don't like it.

I enjoyed jury duty; it's where I learned that "disorderly conduct" essentially means "annoyed the police somehow." We asked for clarification, and no one could give a better definition than that.

I once told high schoolers to get into pairs and then unthinkingly told one group, "Yeah, you can have a threesome." Never did that again

I work with struggling middle school readers, and we learn categories of exceptions, but the answer is usually, "We stole that word from another language."

Bonus: It alarms Republican voting canvassers that come to your door. I couldn't figure out why the guy was just staring at me, and then I realized what I was wearing.

It could be worse. This was my local gas station's horrifying offering.

I wore a striped shirt last week, and a middle schooler said, "You look like that guy they made us find in the book." I guess "Waldo" is a tough name to remember for kids of all ages.

Our mourning doves do that when the feeder's empty. We call it contacting customer service.

In third grade, a classmate fed our whole class packing peanuts as a snack on her day to bring something to share (without her parents' knowledge). Not sure why the teacher went along with this, but we were all fine.

One of my middle school students had scarlet fever recently. I said, "Wait, that's still a thing?"

One dive-bombed my head as I was peacefully sitting on a bench in Chicago. Why the hostility, bird?

We were 15 and 16, and his friend wanted to date my friend, who didn't want to go alone. They broke up a month later; we've been together for 26 years.

Smitten Kitchen's broccoli farro salad is so much better than I expected from its simple ingredients.
broccoli rubble farro salad
A quite simple but very kicky approach to a farro salad that’s as good cold as it is warm.

I teach middle school. After a decade of rarely hearing it from kids, it's becoming a thing I need to address frequently again.

I switched classrooms this year, and the first thing a middle schooler asked on seeing my new room was "Where do we go if there's a shooter?"

Thanks! I'll give it a try.
