Oceanographer, parent, ally for diversity and inclusion work
Does anyone know what's happening with NSF oceanography related panels? I think the physical oceanography one is usually early November; presumably it's been cancelled or delayed due to the shutdown. Is there any vague schedule now that they're open again? 🌊

This paper represents an experiment with an 'extra' 2 days of ship time after our funded work was done. These observations were entirely designed by, carried out by, analyzed by and written up by our students. We PIs sat back and stood our watches on deck as told. They did an amazing job 🤩 🌊
Submesoscale processes are important contributors to the global heat budget. Hilditch et al., present high-resolution observations of a subduction event at a dense filament in the Gulf of Mexico estimating the associated heat flux 🌊

A huge national program on diversity in science, that I put a ton of blood sweat tears and effort into because I don't think good science is possible without those things, was canned this morning. How is wanting the best and brightest in the room problematic?!@&? 💔 🌊 🧪

Academic institutions in the US need to seriously consider how they will support and protect their minority faculty during this time. The conditions we face are already hostile for most - targeted attacks and added barriers to advancement will push many to simply walk away.
