Book 1/20: Sheepfarmer's Daughter

My kid's 5th grade class is reading The Westing Game, and my Gen X reader heart is singing. I loved that book. I had the cover pictured here, and it was a library binding. That means it was one of the books my aunt Betsy sent me.

To the surprise of no librarian ever, Tom found a deep historical correspondence of librarians gatekeeping libraries to the detriment of their users...🙄

Dr. Tom Baker, historian, shared his thoughts on a couple events we can use as modern case studies. A 1963 expulsion due to "smut" published in a literary magazine. (We think the student wrote "shit".) And campus politics trends, leaning into the 70s.

Arcane Thurston, student intern and aspiring archivist: they learned that "you can't go into an archive with expectations about what you'll find. You have to embrace the possibilities."

A decade after I closed them because the campus froze the vacant archivist position, we're in the baby steps phase of reopening them. First step: an intern and our mentored student research coordinator looking at the holdings to identify prime digital humanities collections.

I keep listening for his collar, or his toenails on the stairs, and he's just gone. 💔

At 🦃, G bonded with an adult step-cousin who also plays flute. They had an impromptu flute practice session. I thanked Tessa for being so kind to G and she replied "Kind? She was kind to ME. She's cool. When you write your parenting book I'll read it." The kid baffles and delights me.

This guy is clearing the leaves from the snowblower path so we can leave and not worry about the snow blocking his shed. His progeny, to whom he gave his autistic brain tendencies, is melting the fuck down because she wanted to leave at noon. I'm quietly folding laundry. As one does.
