Glaciar Grey - a (much) closer look

Approaching the edge of the glacier by boat. The lake is calm, the sky is quite cloudy with a wedge shape of blue visible between the clouds. The glacier itself is a stark blue colour and appears as a spiked impenetrable wall. There is some barren land at each side of the ice A view looking back at the location I took yesterday's photos from. The scene is bleak and mostly featureless. The ice, lake, and cloudy sky almost blend into one continuous shape reaching from top to bottom of the photo. There are jagged mountains to the left and a small hill to the right. On the ice, there are three people standing in the middle distance Ice, appearing as a wave trapped in form. You can see the blue of the ice beneath the top layers. In the centre of the shot, in the far distance, there are snow or ice covered mountains. Above which there's quite a lot of blue visible in the sky through the clouds In a cave under the surface of the glacier, looking up and out. The ice is so vividly blue. I think it may have been more blue to the eye. The shapes of the cave sides look mangled and tormented, randomly etched away by water as it melts

Wow, it's been a while since the last photo!

Now we're in Chilean Patagonia, on the eastern shore of Lago Grey, a few minutes' walk north from Refugio Grey

View towards Glaciar Grey in the far distance. It is only just visible between the two farthest peaks. More prominent is a large chunk of blue ice that has floated southwards into the little bay next to the viewpoint. The lake continues a short distance off shot to the bottom right. The hills to the right are jagged and sprinkled with snow. The hill to the left looks generally more inviting. The entire scene is dramatic, with the clouds forming what look like giant brush strokes across the sky. This was taken in late autumn so most of the greenery has turned a mix of browns and yellows A better look at the chunk of ice from the glacier. It is still, having grounded itself on the bed of the lake. It isn't far from the edge. It was making some very loud cracking noises as pieces broke and splashed into the water. Behind are the same jagged, snow-sprinkled dramatic hills/mountains with autumnal colours decorating them towards their base that were visible on the first photo A view of the mountains from Refugio Grey. The trees range from green, through brown, and into a warm orangey-red. The colours on the hillside match. The peaks in the distance look sharp. There's snow covering quite a lot of them. The sky is mostly cloudy with some spots of visible blue sky A sign showing the extents of Glaciar Grey throughout the years. The sign itself is on the small outcrop on the right that was covered with ice until 1975. The area where the block of ice was is in that U shaped bay on the right, where lines 5 (1986) and 6 (1975) also follow the shape of the land. Handy reference if you wanted a sobering reminder that the ice is melting

We're off to Hoover Dam
Panorama of the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, from the lake side. The dam and intake towers are visible on the left of the shot, and the lake takes up the rest of the photo. The road bridge is visible behind the dam, to the left in shot. There are various artificial structures along the side of the lake in the centre of shot. There are power pylons seen leading from the dam in both directions. Cables and cables. In terms of structures, the road bridge dominates the shot, spanning the valley. There are pylons, supports, pulleys, and electrical cables crossing the entire scene. The pylon on the left is at an angle to allow the cables to pass up the steep side of the valley and out. There are hills in the distance behind. The sky is quite cloudy. A view looking down the "out" side of the dam, at buildings down in the valley. The building walls conform perfectly to the sides of the valley. The smooth dam walls are visible across the bottom of the scene. The Colodaro River sits in the middle of the buildings, which form a sort of U shape.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe

Another winter's day where the light was gone all too quickly

Castle ruins sitting on the edge of a cliff. There's short grass in front and the sea behind it. The main remaining tower is no longer whole. Scaffolding is visible within it. The sun is starting to set, turning the cloudy sky orange. A view through a barricaded doorway. This leads into a much less stable section of the structure so has been blocked off. The stonework at the top of the archway is jagged. There is more castle beyond. A view from outside the ruins, looking at natural rock stacks and the remains of walls. The horizon is mostly visible in this photo. I'm the distance on the horizon is the Scottish mainland, and likely the area around Keiss and Nybster. Looking through a ruined window frame. The missing stones make the aperture jagged and almost unrecognisable as a window. Beyond, there's the sea with some large flat rocks, an orange sunset, and the Scottish mainland on the horizon.

Duncansby Stacks

A panorama of the area around Duncansby Stacks. The land in the foreground is mostly green, and rises up to continue along the coast at the right of the photo. There's a fence I wouldn't put much trust in at the edge of the cliffs, most apparent at the edge on the left of the photo. Beneath the coastal cliffs are the stacks; 3 pointed outcrops of rock that look like shark teeth sticking out of the water. The sea looks grey and the sky matches it. It was a cold winter's day when I took this photo. A closer view of two of the stacks. There's no fence here - it's very much a case of choosing your own adventure. The stack on the left is very jagged and almost looks like pixel art. There is a bright band of winter sun between the grey sea and the grey clouds above. The cliffs continue on into the distance on the right of the photo.

Inside the fog horn building.

Seemingly long abandoned machinery.
This stuff is fascinating.
Looking into the entranceway of the fog horn building, on top of which sits the fog horn. The door is off its hinge and lying open, propped up to the side. On it is a mostly worn away sign that reads danger, with the G missing, and the word "No" which looks to be the start of another word or sentence, no longer present. The building is a single room with crumbling yellow paint. On the back wall there is a green mechanism of unknown function with cogs and chains making up the most obvious components. If I had to guess, I'd say it was some kind of clock or timer. Looking into the corner of the room from the same doorway, there's another mechanism that resembles a giant meat grinder. The very bottom of the fog horn is connected into the top of it. It is painted green in here - a stark contrast to the red colour of the rest of it. This one is mostly pipes, screw threads, and some sort of hand wheel. There's a lot of rust, and it has the look of something with missing components.

Loch Shiel from the eastern end, at the Glenfinnan visitor centre. There are hills along both sides of the loch, and two islands to the left of shot; one larger than the other. The Glenfinnan Monument is visible in the middle distance as a silhouette. The photo is taken at around sunset. The sky is blue but dominated by a large cloud hanging over the loch. The winter sun casts a warm light over the landscape, making the scene appear golden.

The crannog I visited at The Scottish Crannog Centre, before it was destroyed by arson.

The crannog, at The Scottish Crannog Centre. A round construction made primarily of timbers, set out in the shallows of Loch Tay. It has a round peaked thatch roof and there's an open doorway straight ahead. The crannog is reached by a raised wooden walkway at the same height as the floor of the building, which is where the photo was taken from. Loch Tay and the green hills behind it provide the backdrop in the photo. There are some distant comparatively modern buildings on the opposite side of the loch, at the middle right of the photo, which I think must be the village of Acharn.
