Loving life… writing Steamy, Historical Romance +Travel Adventure after a career in public education as an English Teacher and Principal.
I missed the deadline by minutes but, like you, the process taught me a lot about what agents and editors might be looking for. Good luck.

Attempt next:

After killing an attacker and evading the Boston Watch as a stowaway, the last thing she expects to find in the cabin is the ratbag from the dinner party, perhaps her greatest threat yet.

Just thought I'd share... and let it by.
Again, I appreciate your feedback.

Thank you. I've read the article. It's a challenge. I appreciate your help. I'll see what I can come up with. I've shared this with many people and your feedback is constructive and one I can work with.

Here’s a first go at one:

Her independent drive brought her to the wrong place, but her use of self-defense left one man dead and another tormented by her as a stowaway in his cabin lest she be found by the Boston Watch.

Any thoughts to help me narrow my list. I had cut it in half from before their intro days.

My 99,000ish word Historical Romance +Travel Adventure … I have narrowed my editor list down to four:
Caroline M. Tell
Hannah Kate Kelley
Miranda Darrow
Megan Records
Do I need to narrow it down further? Who do you feel is more inclined to HR? They all have Romance on their list, but more too.

Thank you, all, for sharing.

When Caroline kills a man on the docks and escapes as a stowaway on her uncle’s ship, she must face the temptation of James, her unexpected roommate, or face the heavy hands of the Boston Watch.

(HR+Travel Adventure)

Would you consider Historical Romance? We’re talking 1846 America.

Puzzles, crocheting, cats, dogs, writing… add chickens, kayaking, and binging HR audiobooks to that list and our lists would match.

I absolutely love the analogy…. And the art❣️

When Caroline kills a man on the docks and escapes as a stowaway on her uncle’s ship, she must face the temptation of James, her unexpected roomate, or face the heavy hands of the Boston Watch.

Thank you for the reminder of the formula. Not sure why I ignored it — thinking too deeply about it! 🤷‍♀️

I get hung up with the query request of a single sentence pitch. I’ll work on it. Do potential agents mean one sentence or could it be a template wording?

How do you put your mind and heart into any specific genre with such a broad spectrum? I have a HR+Travel Adventure and a HEA of course. Are you in a mode or mindset for that kind of novel this season? You could go from horror to romance and everything in between. Such a challenge.

This is hilarious. My daughter made her first loaf yesterday! It came out great!

It has been a challenge to get brutally honest feedback. It's just what my work needs. How do you establish a level of trust with your writers?
March 6, 2025 at 11:48 PM
How do you approach the editing process in supporting a first time author? After retiring from a career in education (English teacher and Principal), I've been working on Querying and have taken advantage of learning more through Writer's Workshop. In a slump... need to consider new insight.
