New york always already cared about Interpol’s imaginary relations to the real conditions of the bowery ballroom’s existence.

I liked it; but the scenes relevant to my point here are a small part of it, and mostly in season 2 (the season with margo martindale and kaitlyn dever just dominating the screen, so, bonus).

Maybe we blame film history a bit for this - the catholic visual grammar is so well-developed, and leaving that resource on the table to build a new evangelical mise-en-scene would take a sense that that’s necessary. But i thought ‘Justified’ had some interesting takes on cinematic protestantism.

Johnson is one of my favorite directors, so i mean all of this with love.

Just watched an interview in which johnson confessed (ha!) he’d grown up evangelical and ‘really believed into his twenties, at which point he discovered Other People and Jung - host did not follow up with the very important question : so why did you set the film in catholicism?
December 16, 2025 at 1:14 AM
Yeah; the film’s use of confession and hierarchy here leans on (and reifies) cultural shorthand that those things are uniquely Catholic. They’re not! Protestant churches (even evangelical ones) have both choreographed revelations and institutional organization.

Lost opportunity, too, to pull out 1) the weirdness of combining the tropes of terrible puritan pastor with those of abusive parish priest, 2) upstate new york’s revivalist roots, and 3) the intense relevance of combining conservative catholic and protestant tropes in the current political moment.

That seems like a misrepresentation of the ‘no irish’ signs, weakening an argument that needs to be made about real, structural differences between anti -irishness and anti- blackness. www.irishcentral.com/roots/histor...
“No Irish Need Apply” signs existed despite denials, high schooler proved
High school student Rebecca A. Fried found overwhelming evidence that the No Irish Need Apply signs were very real and very prevalent.

My favorite part was when he said university writing about religion is distinguishing calvinist interpretations of the bible from not-calvinist, then makes the anchoring analogy of the whole piece a fully unexplored gloss on Jewish law about plowing fields with mixed teams.

Whoa; will need to update several powerpoints. Damn.

While the original post talks about the ‘2020 sanders campaign’ your question shifted to ‘sanders’. Maybe many things made him divisive, but the relevance of it all to u.s. politics crystallized in the 2016 primary. Inter- (and intra-) 2020 dem campaign fights refract through that crystal.

It wan’t subjective, but feel free to argue any way you like.

You said your question was honest; that is the answer. You can backtrack into confounding variables, but that’s the answer to the question you posed.

Much of it was press, fanned by or-bust supporters (a big reason for journalists writing the stories to begin with). But sanders, in keeping with an overall grumpy brand, endorsed clinton about a month later than what’s traditional, legitimizing skepticism in a way that probably had an impact.

She says she found out later that everyone on staff thought she must be sleeping with the boss to keep her job when other (senior) people were cut. She wasn’t! She was just being rewarded for keeping a state secret that it legit never occurred to her was big until her kids freaked out at the story.
