Got a gravel bike with mechanical disc brakes and after today's ride, I'm convinced that I should upgrade to hydraulic. It has a 10-speed Tiagra 2x groupset with a 50/34T up front and 11/34t in back. Need to decide if I should go 1x, get a new groupset, or just change to Tiagra hydraulic […]

Found this photo I tried to take of a dog named “Nugget”, and I think I really captured its spirit.

Given the number of kids I see walking around in Nirvana shirts, I wouldn’t know where to start.

I miss Commander, the White House dog who hated cops, but I’m glad they named the Washington football team after him.

FYI, I backed the Kickstarter for this nonstick carbon steel pan and got mine in August. I previously got two carbon steel pans from them which are fine, and an Dutch oven that I love, but I'm blown away by how light, non-stick and excellent this pan is. 20% off at the moment […]

I was walking through our living room to the dining room and heard something bang into the awning over the back window and saw something crashing down to the ground. I started worrying that it wa part of the roof or the solar panels or a bird that hit a window… and got to the window to see an […]

#mediawiki 1.44.1 uses this code to determine if a skin is responsive. DEEP SIGH.

At the top of the function it says:

"Please call SkinFactory::getSkinOptions instead."

Which it does not do.

Anyway, if you want a responsive theme that works, you have to hardcode it somewhere!

I upgraded a #mediawiki site I maintain to 1.44.1 so that I could fix some issues and I was excited to switch to the Vector-2022 theme which is fully responsive. Got it up and running, tested it on my desktop at various widths and was very pleased.

Then I tried it on my phone: not responsive at […]

I think the new derailleur hanger that my bike shop ordered has come in, but they called twice without leaving a message and now aren't calling me back. The shifting is fine... as long as I don't need my 11t cog. I'm doing the Sea Gull Century tomorrow, 106 miles of flats, leaving in 90 minutes […]

@helvetica the problems since the last Good Sudoku update persist:
• Streaks are wrong, and leaderboards don’t show all recent scores
• Scores all earn gold stars, kinda
• It’s really hard to get around this Apple Arcade icon over the top of the top left corner […]

My wife got a good deal on a New Albion Privateer frameset and I got to turn it into a bike. Because the frame and fork were so cheap, we could spend more on components, which came in handy because she needs very short cranks and almost nobody makes short-pull […]

I did a lot of riding this summer, and I continue to have bottom bracket troubles.

In May of 2023 I got into biking on an aluminum city bike, but after a month, the right crank arm started taking chunks of paint and metal out of the right chainstay. The bike had less than 500 miles on it, the […]

@overcastfm it’s been since two redesigns ago, but IIRC, you used to be able to click on the name of a podcast in the now playing screen to get to its listing and manage following or download new episodes, and I really miss that. Unless I am misremembering, in which case I really want that […]

Just tried installing version 1.4.4 of MediaWiki with the LocalSettings.php file configured by the installation procedure, and even though the MinervaNeue skin is installed and being loaded, it throws an error. All of the other three skins work. Any ideas?

Okay, I must have some doctors or sorts medicine experts following me, right?

Lately, after a long (40+ miles), hard (2000+ KJoules), hot (>80°F) ride, my newest sign of dehydration is that I get that underwater sound thing in one or both my ears. Is my body leaching water out of my cochlea […]

Shelley and I are planning a bike tour this fall, but when I couldn't find great resources to plan the trip, I decided to turn to LLMs.

It went about like you'd expect.

Got a warning from my Apple Watch that last night my heart rate was elevated while I was sleeping, and I got a little worried. Then I saw that it was 8bpm higher than my normal 41bpm and... it's hard to be worried about a resting heart rate of 49.

@BmoreCityDOT I sent this message through the contact form on the DOT website as I couldn’t find a “report a bike lane that cars are using so often that it’s unsafe for bikes form.” If there’s a more appropriate place, please let me know.

“I frequently ride my bike around Lake Montebello, and […]

Knowing that I've built some bikes for myself, my wife has asked me to help her build a touring bike out of a frameset she bought. My problem is that she'd like an 11-speed groupset with 155mm cranks.

When I've installed a groupset before, the crankset came as a package just the way I wanted it […]

I don’t know how to explain to my former colleagues that writing software with LLMs is just free beta testing for your replacement. The plan isn’t to make developers more efficient, it’s to obviate the need for developers.
