#ECAS2025, where @alilacandonga.bsky.social and I had wonderful two panels on medical socialist entanglements between Eastern Europe and Africa, including, among others, @severyandyakonov.bsky.social. Also heard some excellent talks on veterans, memory of anti-colonial wars and public health!

Besides highlighting the similarities in military medicine, disability care, and veterans’ welfare, the paper illuminates the importance of care for the wounded and disabled, and symbolism of the wounded fighter as vital for Yugoslav medical assistance to Algeria‘s FLN.

Finally out! The paper studies Yugoslav medical assistance to the FLN as stemming from the WW2 experience of the People‘s Liberation War, part of the forthcoming special issue edited by @doravargha.bsky.social, @alilacandonga.bsky.social and Luis Aue.

Research at @rutgershsl.bsky.social in Newark this week, working with papers of Henry H. Kessler, a leading expert in rehabilitation who worked in postwar Yugoslavia and trained Yugoslav experts at his institute in New Jersey, who would later establish the field of veterans’ disability care at home

Just arrived to Reggio Emilia excited about the 3 days of discussions about antifascism and actors, practices and meanings after 1989 (and curious about “international turbo folk” band playing on the main square tonight) #Liberazione80

I really enjoyed talking to @katkusic.bsky.social for @recetvienna.bsky.social podcast about her work on land as more than an object of policy.

What role did the memory and legacies
of WW2 play in Yugoslav exchanges with anti-colonial liberation movements?
In this new article in International Review of Social History, I am looking at the agency of war veterans in anti-colonial solidarity, focusing on Algeria.
