This photograph shows the massive Skógafoss, a nearly 200 ft and 80 ft wide waterfall on the south coast of Iceland. Taking on a cold January day, the mist rising from the falling water stands out from the cliffs around the waterfall and forms icicles along the walls. The River that the waterfall dumps into leads your eye to the bright white falling water, and the bright sky above the cliff creates a wedge that points to the falling water. This one is worth the cold and the crowds. People were kind enough to take photos and then move out of the way so others could get photos without other people in them. If traveling in the winter, the stairs to the top of the waterfall are open but icy. I highly recommend bringing shoe covers that offer traction on ice.

A local dog treat maker had these adorable treats shaped like dogs. Then I realized the macabre potential of the treats, and had to get a photo of my dog enjoying them. This photo shows a dog sitting to accept a dog-shaped treat. There's a bit of motion blur as the treat enters the dog's mouth, and a flash of white teeth as she chomps down on the delicious treat. The black dog is so excited that you can see the whites of her eyes, giving her a bit of a crazed look. The large dog, even in its excitement, is careful not to bite the fingers of the treat giver.

Winter is my favorite time to hike in this valley. The light is always dramatic within all the trees, there are fewer bugs that want to eat me, and briars and burrs have taken a rest for the winter. This image shows a small creek flowing through a valley bottom. Tree-covered hills on either side of the creek bend upwards towards the sky. The atmospheric air plays with the sunlight that's peeking over the hill. Beams of light filter between the trees to reflect in the water of the stream.

This photo shows a pathway with it in a Grove of tall bamboo. On the path or a couple dressed in traditional kimonos with patterned umbrellas. I visited this location as early as I could when I took the train to Kyoto. It's a popular location, so the path fills up with tourists pretty quickly. This couple hired a photographer to take their photo and I quickly grabbed a few photos as I got out of their shot.

This wide-angle photograph shows the detailed and colorful stained glass that fills multiple levels of the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky. Here it's easy to see how the weight, weight of the ceiling and walls are distributed through archway systems that run between the windows and up to the ribs of the ceiling in the semicircular apse. The windows illustrate some of the miracles of Jesus. Jesus stands out in the windows as he is wearing a rich red robe in compositions that are mostly blue.

The orange Tori Gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine go on for miles. In this photo I'm standing at the base of a large grouping of Tori Gates that line a staircase going uphill. The gates are framed and the shot with trees surrounding them and a group of people a ways up into the gates.

I posted a different angle of this scene a few weeks ago. This was taken in 2024 in Southern Indiana. The darkest place I could get included this water tower that adds a surreal scale and creepy "War of the Worlds" element. The image shows a low perspective of a treeline in silhouette, and a water tower reaching a great height in the night sky that is backed by red and green lights from the Aurora Borealis.

Lushan National Park was bathed in clouds when I visited. While the vistas were invisible it reminded me of Chinese paintings where cloud banks obscured large parts of compositions to give a transition to different parts of the picture plane and express great distance. The mood presented by the weather in this very spiritual UNESCO World Heritage Site was exquisite. This photo overlooks a bridge that leads to an island with a small temple and walkway for meditation. The island is covered in tall evergreen trees. Fog obscures the background entirely.

I took this photo on a January 2019 trip to Iceland. This popular waterfall was worth the hype. If you look closely to the left, you can see icicles on the rocky cliff face. The cold January air intensified the mist coming from the waterfall The angle of the sun cast a shadow in front of the waterfall, so when the light hit the mist, the rainbow it created was backed by shadow making it pop even brighter than normal. The photograph has a composition that's split in half. The left side is filled with mist and cliff, while the right side is filled with the waterfall. The top left corner shows the sun hitting the cliff while the rest of the photo is in shadow except for the rainbow in the center showing where the sun is coming through the mist.

This photograph shows a wall with an inset rectangle near the top and a vent near the bottom. The wall is covered in used chewing gum and street art that has been pasted to the wall. The gum is a disgusting texture, a variety of colors, and it reaches as far up as people can reach up the wall. The street art features a zombified demonic Benjamin Franklin, a rodent with the word Dingus on its forehead, aliens and more appropriately creepy imagery for an alley that's filled with ABC gum.

This vertical format photo shows a great difference in elevation. The very base of the photo shows the water of Glacier Bay that leads to the Johns Hopkins Glacier. The glacier leads up into great cliffs, snow, and rocky landscapes that taper into a point that becomes Mount Fairweather with a few wispy clouds at its peak. The image is almost monochromatic full of varying shades of blue and white.

A low angle of the orange rocks at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. This photo shows the bottom 2/3 of the image filled with orange sandstone. The ridges and lines in the sandstone lead you to a large outcropping of jagged and much deeper orange colored rock. The rock outcropping juts the sky which is filled with interestingly patterned and puffy, white clouds and a deep blue that compliments the orange rock.

The photo is composed of a close view of an insect on concrete moving towards the camera. The insect is a colorful beetle with a red, yellow and green iridescent exoskeleton. I found this beetle upside down struggling to right itself. I helped it turn over and it paused for a few photos. I've never seen a rainbow scarab alive in person and was happy that I checked out the fluttering noise that I heard in my driveway.

This photo shows a landscape in black and white with a foggy scene of a building and trees. The building is obscured by the fog, it is a Georgian style brick building with the central colonnade and three floors of Windows. The columns on the building are framed by an arching tree that bends in ways that perhaps a tree should not. It's a large tree that fills the frame from bottom to top and its lacy branches that are empty of leaves further obscure the building. The tree starts to bend as soon as it branches out from the trunk making it unsettling in how intensely it bends. The thought of the tree breaking or being in motion as a sentient and mobile being come to mind for me.
