I see it a lot in Energy - if no experience with, say, fracking, then opinions are likely aligned with political party, media consumption, etc. But if they start drilling your/neighbors/parents land, etc then it becomes complicated & non-linear, more dependent on if experience is good/bad etc

lot going on to be sure - CLT would say its not literal experience per se but how real or abstract it feels (often due to experience, or maybe it didn't happen to you but happened to a close friend, so it feels real). but real-feeling stuff often gets messy, unpredictable, breaks containment

check out Construal Level Theory for a scientific description of this phenom, if interested. As you say, key is "most topics" - if the person has "real life experience" with the topic, tho, then suddenly political affiliation doesn't matter as much or might even become trailing indicator
