For some aspiring teachers, these thousands of hours observing teachers as K-12 students are now often supplemented by many (hundreds? thousands?) hours of observing teaching-related social media content. This social media observation is accompanied by opportunities, challenges, and tradeoffs.

We discuss how this early exposure to social media can be understood to represent a new facet of the apprenticeship of observation. Lortie (1975) conceptualized the apprenticeship of observation as the time future teachers spend observing teachers at work during their own time as K-12 students.

Some of the learning participants described was deliberate and intentional, while algorithms also played an important role curating many learning experiences. A few participants started looking for teaching-related content on social media in UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL🤯

For almost all participants, this learning began before they began their teacher education program. PSTs demonstrated some awareness of the complexities and challenges of such learning. Most PSTs valued content shared by teachers on social media but did not see these teachers as role models.

To explore & conceptualize how social media may be adding to PSTs’ knowledge & expectations of teaching, we interviewed 28 PSTs about factors, experiences, & role models contributing to their understanding of teaching. ALL participants reported having learned about teaching through social media.
