Relations Among Gender Typicality, Peer Relations, and Mental Health During Early Adolescence Jennifer A. Jewell and Christia Spears Brown, University of Kentucky Abstract The current study examines whether being high in gender typicality is associated with popularity, whether being low in gender typicality is associated with rejection/teasing, and whether teasing due to low gender typicality mediates the association with nega- tive mental health. Middle school children (34 boys and 50 girls) described hypotheti- cal popular and rejected/teased peers, and completed self-report measures about their own gender typicality, experiences with gender-based teasing, depressive symptoms, anxiety, self-esteem, and body image. Participants also completed measures about their peers’ gender typicality, popularity, and likeability. Results indicated that popular youth were described as more gender typical than rejected/teased youth. Further, being typical for one’s gender significantly predicted being rated as popular by peers, and this relationship was moderated by gender. Finally, low gender typicality predicted more negative mental health outcomes for boys. These relationships were, at times, mediated by experiences with gender-based teasing, suggesting that negative mental health outcomes may be a result of the social repercussions of being low in gender typicality rather than a direct result of low typicality. Keywords: gender; popularity; teasing Introduction Recent media coverage of teen suicides led to a widespread public discourse about the impact of teasing on adolescents, particularly when that teasing was related to teens ‘not fitting in’ as a typical boy or typical girl. In addition, media coverage has highlighted the ways that peers harass and ostracize boys and girls who are deemed atypical for their gender (see Russell, Kosciw, Horn, & Saewyc, 2010). Little empirical research, however, has examined how being atypical for one’s gender is related to peer harassment.… Current Study and Hypotheses In the current study, children in early adolescence were asked to describe hypothetical popular and rejected/teased peers. We assessed whether they spontaneously associated popularity with gender typicality and rejection/teasing with atypicality. We hypoth- esized that descriptions of popular boys and girls would include more gender typical descriptions than those of rejected/teased boys and girls, and conversely that descrip- tions of rejected/teased boys and girls would include more gender atypical descriptions than those of popular boys and girls. Second, children rated their peers based on popularity, likeability, and typicality. We hypothesized that individual children’s gender typicality would predict their popularity among their peers, over and above their likeability. We also hypothesized, because of the asymmetry in the enforcement of norms for boys and girls (Pascoe, 2007), that gender would moderate this association such that boys’ typicality would be more closely tied to their popularity than girls’ typicality. Third, children completed measures of mental health outcomes. We hypothesized that low gender typicality would be associated with greater depressive symptoms and anxiety, and lower self-esteem and body image. We also hypothesized that gender- based teasing would mediate this association in that being low in gender typicality would be associated with being teased more frequently, which in turn would be associated with more negative mental health outcomes. The current study focused on gender typicality and peer relationships in middle school. We chose this age group for three reasons. First, gender intensification in middle school leads to greater gender conformity (Galambos, 2004; Hill & Lynch, 1983). I was in the Kentucky legislature in the' Os and in the 1960 session. in those years I believed very strongly that our educational shortcomings in the Kentucky mountains could be overcome with new and consolidated schools and better paid and better educated teachers. I was a leader in the prolonged fight to establish the state's Minimum foundation plan for schools. Since then Kentucky has poure enormous sums into the task o upgrading the mountain schools. Consolidation is now virtually complete and new libraries and new laboratories are commonplace. The "emergency" teacher who lacks a degree has almost disappeared from the scene. At the same time, the general environment has been improved immensely. The federal government has poured out lavish sums for food, repairing homes, welfare and pension grants of numerous kinds. To a laege extent the "War on Poverty" cantered here in east Kentucky. And yet, IQ scores have been declining steadily and the Appalachian poverty that was so widely written about in the 1 60s has persisted. The poverty that is associated with our region is accompanied by passivity and dependence and I see no present hope for allaying it. I have come full circle in my thinking and have reluctantly concluded that the poverty that called into being the Appalachian eegional Commission is largely genetic in origin and is Largely irreducible. I have read with tremendous interest the papers and books you, have sent to me end am each indebted to both of you for them. The Jensee article is simply tremendous. When I read the things you have written and then read the almost rabid comments that have been made about you, i am impelled as an American citizen, to offer my apologies for my fellow citizens. It seems thee most of your critics criticize before they read what you have said or written. In conclusion I will say that I know absolutely nothing about the issue of white vs. black intelligence. We have few blacks in this area and practically all my observations have dealt with whites. There is no doubt in my mind at the present time that our welfare programs and general humanitarian principles and practices have contrived to effectively repeal the first law of nature so that young and old alike survive to procreate. Paul Simon had encountered Maggie and Terre Roche earlier, and asked them to sing on the song "Was a Sunny Day" on his 1973 album There Goes Rhymin' Simon. Despite further support, the Roches disliked the involvement of Simon's record company, particularly their advice that the sisters "wear hipper clothes." Terre Roche later said: We were humiliated... We wanted to get out of the whole situation. We had a friend in Hammond, Louisiana, who was running a kung fu school. We gave up our apartment and told the record company, ‘We’re not going to promote the record anymore; we’re going away for a while.’ This was two weeks after the record came out. Maggie wrote the "Hammond Song" about the whole experience.[2] They showed me that they have an assassination list, and Paul Simon was at the top of it. CNN, 2/24/2003 NEW YORK (Variety) -- Universal Pictures has joined in optioning "The Elric Saga," a multi-part, Tolkein-esque fantasy series written by Michael Moorcock, for development as a potential big-screen trilogy. The literary series began with 1972's "Elric of Melnibone." Universal's option deal with production company Depth of Field covers 11 books -- the original six installments of the series and five subsequent novels that touch on the saga. The film adaptation, which will be produced but not written or directed by Depth of Field partners Chris and Paul Weitz, is conceived as a potential trilogy whose first installment will be culled from the series' first six volumes. The producers plan to shop the book to writers and directors. The novels are sensual and atmospheric sword-and-sorcery tales that center on Elric, a brooding albino warrior who presides over an unruly, decadent island nation. The novels follow Elric on a series of adventures, in which he is betrayed by his cousin, sent into exile and attempts to come to terms with his own humanity. "We have loved this series since we were kids and can appreciate it even more as adults. It's a sophisticated, literate, philosophically dense fantasy -- a sort of 'Matrix' of the sword-and-sorcery genre," Chris Weitz said. Moorcock oversaw the sci-fi magazine New Worlds and helped usher in the "new wave" sci-fi movement of the 1960s and '70s. Nope, along with his brother and former co-director Paul, Chris Weitz is going to take on the biggest fantasty-literature property as yet untouched by movieland: Michael Moorcock’s Elric saga. Elric of Melniboné, aka Elric Kinslayer, aka The White Wolf first appeared in print in 1961, and is the anti-hero of more than a dozen books. A physically weak, perpetually sickly albino who’s the outcast Emperor of a race of cruel, ancient decadent people, he’s no musclebound Conan-type, instead drawing his power from the spirit-sucking runesword Stormbringer, an evil entity with whom he struggles for his own soul. And he’s frankly one of the greatest fantasy characters out there – albeit one who’s going to be fiendishly hard to make work on screen. “Of the great classic fantasy series it’s the one that hasn’t been done yet,” Weitz tells Empire online. “My brother Paul and I liked those books growing up and we’ve met Michael Moorcock and he trusts us to take those books forward.” The Weitz’s Depth Of Field production company will be behind the adaptation, although no director is yet attached. Weitz does have one in mind, though: “I’d really like it if my brother directed them,” he says.

1987 schwinn mirada in teal. it’s an 80s “road bike geometry with extra heavy tubing” style all terrain bike with 26” tanwalls, a 24/34/44 triple and 12-28 cassette. the handlebars and stem are matching teal and the seat is silver vinyl. it was in a barn and smells like cigarette smoke
