The *Microbes Persist* project I lead is featured in LLNL’s new Science and Tech magazine. We’re trying to understand how genomes of tiny organisms control the creation & breakdown of soil organic matter— a critical ingredient in keeping our soils healthy and productive.

I generally say ‘yes’ when I get the chance to do field work…spent the last 2 days helping BruceHungate & Ecoss (NAU) collect the last samples from a 22 year soil warming experiment. Big feels… & I’d rate this in the top 1% most beautiful field sites ever!!

We’re doing a little kitchen enviro science. Hypothesis is that no-till soil is more biodiverse. But Diversity is a tough one-you have a gut sense of it, but then Simpson or Shannon tell you different. You realize you can never sample enough. So we’re learning about soil heterogeneity the hard way.
