He tilts his head back, laughing into the ocean of blue above, and for a moment Seonghwa, too, almost believes this man could take flight. Then, he clenches the sword between his teeth and lets himself fall backward into the water in an elegant arc. Seonghwa dives back under the waves, concealing himself in darker waters as all eyes turn to the sea; the man is sawing at his bonds with the blade in his teeth, bits of frayed rope drifting down and disappearing into the depths. Hands freed, he spits the sword out and kicks upward, surfacing with a breath and making for the harbor with quick, graceful strokes. He swims swiftly, for a man, and escape seems assured as the ship's crew argue whether to give chase; Seonghwa feels a curious sense of elation as he watches, as though some part of him (continued) swims alongside the man in his daring deed. Perhaps he will watch this one, if he stays near the sea-- A sharp noise rings out from the ship, faintly muffled through the water, and the man jerks. Seonghwa smells the blood even before the stain of crimson blooms, a dark cloud welling from the man's side; on the ship, he spots the captain standing at the stern, something long of ornate iron raised like a deadly spyglass. To his credit, the man swims valiantly despite the trail of scarlet streaming behind him, wincing with each desperate stroke; but be it by pain or loss of blood, his motions grow sluggish and slow, until he's barely holding himself above water. Then, with a painful splutter, he slips below the waves and sinks into the kelp forest below. The ship's captain lowers his iron device with an air of satisfaction; he turns away, shouting orders at his crew to return to their posts. Seonghwa watches the ship recede, the smell of blood bitter at the back of his throat. He cannot keep his eyes from turning to the barely-visible figure at the bottom of the swaying seaweed bed. Perhaps he will regret this. But regret is the concern of beings with far shorter lives.

Today kicks off the National Week of Action to remember, honor, and raise awareness for our relatives who face violence at a rate higher than any other demographic. Text reads: MMIW stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and refers to an epidemic of violence against American Indian and Alaskan Native women and people. Sometimes referred to as Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) or Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR). The Red Dress movement started as an art installation by Métis artist Jaime Black and soon spread across Canada and North America. While #MMIW, coined by Sheila North Wilson, has brought attention to the cause, much more work is needed. It can be challenging to gather all of the data on murdered and missing relatives. Even today, many Native people are misidentified on official records, and more than half of violent incidents go unreported. Image shows a woman wearing a red skirt with text that reads: Red represents so many things, love, anger, blood - and it calls attention. Wearing red puts a spotlight on the MMIW cause, which honors the Native girls, women, and people who are missing or murdered.

This is abhorrent.

It's also hard not to see this as connected to the administration's push to expand extractive industries, including oil and gas — the report identifies associated "man camps" as a significant contributing factor to MMIW, and recommends mitigating actions for federal leases.
