I'm disappointed that you don't want to be in politics but that's on me, not you; I think you'd be great at it. But seeing as you've been a professor before, would you consider teaching in Public Policy? The sort of thing you're describing in this thread IMO is something that ought to be taught.

You aren’t wrong about the hideous makeup, but it’s obvious that the lighting on the ear isn’t present on the cheek. Shadow.

(To be more exact, only slightly above)

His face is partially in shadow. You can tell by the reflection off the top of his earlobe that there's a light source above and in front of him and to our right. That light source isn't reaching the front right side of his face.

A nice progressive tax system would make all that unnecessary.

What’s she up to over there? I know she advocates for things like mine-clearing initiatives.

I have a hypothesis: *non-AI* data center energy consumption density (W/m^2 floor) is increasing with server hardware being run closer to capacity (perhaps in part of increased OS instance virtualization) so as AI consumption grows, non-AI is making room for it.

Adjudicated illegal monopolist says what, now?

Someone will comment this so I’d might as well: like Russia, China, Israel, Libya, Qatar, and North Korea, the US isn’t a member of the ICC.

Suffice it to say that a general strike in the US would have to be so extremely pervasive and indefinite that the socioeconomic world that existed after the strike would look very different from the one that existed when it started.

Did this indictment come out of a grand jury?
September 25, 2025 at 11:32 PM
Doesn’t a grand jury have to approve any criminal counts that make it into an indictment?

Good point. In the case of hydro, you lose land to reservoir water but 1) the land you lose might have limited usefulness anyway 2) you may gain back some welfare in the form of flood control and irrigation, which improves the utility of land that’s not even connected to the reservoir.

Nailed it. Data General Nova 2, teletypes, BASIC. 13 years old.

I've never understood why anyone would believe that CO2 pressurized in natural underground reservoirs would stay down there indefinitely. Maybe for a year - or 10, or 100, or 1000 - what's to say it's not going to find its way to the surface where it might asphyxiate a whole town?

I confess to not knowing a whole lot about jurisdictions with respect to criminal investigations so I ask out of honest ignorance: why is the FBI involved?

Hair dryer holder. I have one.

And here’s the real kicker: if you aren’t charging enough for your energy products, you can’t afford to buy that storage.
September 5, 2025 at 3:04 PM
But what it really signifies is that there has been a planning lapse such that you have assets *and* free embargo-proof primary energy that you cannot realize maximum value from because you have not bought enough storage.
