Elvis Costello in Reverse: Used to be amused; currently disgusted.
I can easily imagine way too much of the population sort of looking away when immigrants are rounded up--lots of excuses ("they came ILLEGALLY!), lots of rationalizing ("they're draining city budgets!"), but mostly just ignoring out of convenience.

A book called "Ohio" and set in Ohio mentioned the DMV, but Ohio has BMVs (bureaus) and so I stopped reading fairly early on. Otherwise I feel like I have to finish.

I think there are going to be a lot of versions of this creeping acquiescence in this second Trump term. "Maybe it'll be good that we FILL IN THE BLANK WITH IDEA ONCE THOUGHT HORRIFIBLE." Not sure if it's fatigue, Stockholm syndrome, or stripping away liberal-ish veneer to reveal core values.

Great quote but apparently NOT from James Baldwin. It's from Robert Jones, Jr. www.snopes.com/fact-check/j...
James Baldwin Said 'We Can Disagree and Still Love Each Other'?
James Baldwin has a few talented intellectual heirs.

Besides abortion, which is a winning issues for Dems (not to mention the right position), I'm not seeing much ID politics on either of the Dem options. We can't help it when GOP lies+cash overwhelm the debate.

This is tired. Name one Dem who ran on an identity brand; they just didn't run away from being allies to (many) marginalized groups. Are you suggesting they should have? GOP lies, atop a thick cushion of cryptobro cash, made actual working class advocate Sherrod Brown the candidate of bathrooms.
