This encouraged the troops to see themselves as the rightful rulers of the Soviet Union & used traditional moral concepts to convince the men of the righteousness of the cause.

Edward Westermann's chapter 2 examines the relationship between the center & periphery in Latvia in 1941, focusing on the German murder of Jews in Liepaja. Tension between various German centers and peripheries complicates our understanding of how German policy evolved over the course of 1941.

Chapter 1 is by the historian who has changed our understanding of Operation Barbarossa. David Stahel examines the 1941/42 winter crisis in Army Group Center at the operational level & revises the way Hitler's Halt Order and & army's response to it should be understood. @cornellupress.bsky.social
