Natural gas prices are relatively low now, but residential gas utility rates are nearing record highs. Customers are paying more for infrastructure, construction, utility costs and taxes than they are for the actual fuel. My @npr.org story: www.npr.org/2025/10/13/n...

The dog park is empty when the Eagles are playing (the football team, not the band).

20 years ago, I wrote a short essay after working as part of the 2nd crew of NPR reporters covering the effects of Hurricane Katrina. The photo is of a sign that was taped to the bus/train station, which had been turned into a makeshift jail.

And, yes, I named the thermostat after our dearly departed Rosie the Newscat.

My utility took over my thermostat and raised the a/c temp to 76 degrees! I’m more excited than I should be, but have never seen this before!

If advertising on social media is so targeted, why am I being asked if I’m “Ready to get away to New Jersey?” For 3 nights?!? At a Best Western??!!??

The electric grill story emails keep rolling in... My reaction after reading this one, "Wait... Does he think I'm under 50?" Made my day!

Here’s our little boy Rochester!

Rochester and I discussed the unitary executive theory and now he looks worried about me.

Have you bought an Energy Star product? What do you think of it? Notice any differences from conventional versions? What do you know about the Energy Star program? I'd like to get a sense of what people think and know -- either below or directly via email: jbrady@npr.org

Is “made in batches” really a selling point? As opposed to what — individually? Continuously? And how large are these batches? In any case, they go well with spinach and a martini.

Rochester and I were just discussing the unitary executive theory and now he won’t stop looking at me like this…

Sometimes I have a sweet moment with my husband and a snuggle-wuggle with my puppy and wonder, why would someone choose to be a jerk? Seriously, it’s nice to be nice. (Reporter on vacation — back to cranky-holding-power-to-account next week).

HVAC climate nerds: we have a 50 year old gas boiler that works fine, but would like to replace before it doesn’t. We have hot water radiators and are in the Philadelphia area. We’ll spend a little more for climate-friendly. Suggestions?

Amid chaos, I'm listening to past stories that inspired and grounded me. In 2006 Larry Haverfield defied neighbors and allowed prairie dogs on his Kansas ranch because he wanted the habitat returned to "the way it was when the buffalo owned it." www.npr.org/2006/12/05/6...

I miss producing stories like this 2007 piece about a wild horse round-up in Nevada -- rich in sound and examining something most of us will never see. It was the first time I'd ever heard of a "Judas horse."

Jimmy Carter wanted his inauguration to reflect his values. The reviewing stand was warmed by solar panels and built so it would have a second life as a bandstand in an Atlanta park. My @npr.org story: www.npr.org/2024/12/29/1...

The Pipeliners spent 20 years under EEOC oversight – actively recruiting women and African-America workers. Despite that Charles Simpson told me, "You'd walk down the pipe and see epithets 'n***** go home' scribbled on the pipe” and he says nooses were left for him and other Black workers. 3/7

Some stories stick with me years later. Here's one about Tulsa-based union Pipeliners Local 798, that dispatches welders & helpers to build oil and gas pipelines around the country. Accused of racism and sexism in the 1980s, there were no women or Black people among 5,200 members. A 🧵... 1/7

Wow, Newsmax just pitched its stock offering to viewers as a news interview. “You’ll be able to go online, use your credit card and be able to be a part of the public offering.” Has an org that considers itself news done this before?

We talked with a public health researcher who learned 50 years ago that gas stoves emit nitrogen dioxide. Since then, he'd only have electric stoves in his home. Ready more about Dr. Carl Shy here: www.npr.org/2023/10/17/1...
