Furthermore, poser culture is problematic in that it becomes endlessly puritan, like who really is a full member of any one group? And I think the counter to that is again, genuine interest, participation or at least admiration and willingness to engage as equals

It’s not really defined by any one race or creed beyond being attached to livestock and agriculture in one way or another, but it’s defined countless cultures spanning more than half of this nation

And cowboy culture being used as an umbrella, those hats and those boots are part of a massive world of equestrians, ranchers, farmers, rednecks, hillbillies, country folks that span pretty much the entire lower coast and neighboring states of the US and Mexico

So they’re posers when they skip around in cowboy boots and flick the brim of their shitty cowboy hat is usually on backwards and beat to hell, they don’t know how to wear it, don’t know the culture behind it, and don’t really care to participate in it

I lost steam but I was suddenly reminded of a coworker from LA that told me it’s weird that I wish I had a thicker accent because I should try to mask my southern accent instead because people will see me as dumb, and as vile as that is to tell someone, people do perceive southern accents that way

So be homeless and unemployed in NYC or LA, or be home with family and friends and familiar faces and a job that pays at least some of your bills hopefully all of them?

You see it like when people give no sympathy to people who chose not to evacuate during Helene or Milton, some have nowhere to go, it’s not always that simple to just leave. And with what money? What means? What about the people that depend on them? The life they are firmly established in?

It’s kind of a symptom of a larger issue of a region of the country that is STILL impacted by the aftermath of the Civil War, and it’s caused some of the most vulnerable communities in the US to go without the support they could use from progressives because “well you should move”

There’s no regard for the sprawling queer culture here, for the complex interracial relations here that go back beyond this nations founding, they just write it off as socially backward and take what they want without ever bothering to fully engage

They don’t have their own culture so they skip around in other people’s and they see southern and western culture as safe to appropriate because it’s just dumb country folks when there is a massive culture, literally the most populated region in the US

I have no idea what that sound is the women make at cutting shows is but it’s this YEEEEEEEEEEEEOWWWWW that can pierce your ears louder than a fighter jet can break the sound barrier and is usually followed with “yeah boy” by some other lady somewhere

They never spent all fucking day at a horse show and you and the other little rat kids watched your moms YEEEEEEEEOW at your dad working a horse while y’all took turns sniffing a carton of milk someone forgot under the bleachers a couple years ago

But that’s just kids helping their parents usually, I moved to the city when I was closer to a teen, but became more familiar with other kinds of southern/southwestern life and it’s a similar aesthetic, similar community at times

They never had to help ur grandpa dig fucking fence posts on a muggy ass summer day and everyone’s just trying to not scream at each other cuz when it’s hot and humid and you’re working hard outside and you’ve known that idiot next to you your whole life, no one pisses you off more in that moment

Like it’s fine, it’s really not the most important thing, but coming from ranchers and farmers, coming from Texas and the Bible Belt my entire life, there is a culture and history behind those outfits and that aesthetic, one I know very well
