ugly is more interesting than beautiful. the duty of the artist is to disgust their audience

the game would still be good even if it looked like modern tech, but it's the fact that it doesn't is what's partially making it such a sleeper hit. the game is hideous, and that's what makes it so compelling

battlefield 6 came out three days ago and looks the best a video game has ever looked. and yet, the talk of the town is still no i am not a human. when n.i.a.n.a.h. isn't jpegs on top of jpegs you can literally count the polygons, and still its visual quality is being praised to no end

we've had the technology to do whatever the fuck we want with games since silent hill 3 came out twenty-two years ago. by 2010 people were losing their minds over heavy rain's visual fidelity, and today in 2025 you can barely tell battlefield 6 from an actual photograph

movies and comics broke out of strict representation extremely fast, but video games historically have been more stubborn to abandon strict realism. i do think lately that's changing on a much more popular scale

why bother committing hundreds of hours to recreating real, meticulous beauty in painting when you can grab literally any camera you want and do the same thing in a fraction of a second? artists as a whole became more interested in fucking around and making things that could only exist as "art"

by the time the renaissance masters had reinvented how the west painted human figures, they got bored and starting fucking around (see: madonna with the long neck)

by the time photography was invented realism became even less important, until eventually we eschewed it completely

this painting exceeds the context of an advertisement and elevates itself to being genuinely excellent artistic composition. i'm so pissed.
