I did a little hackathon with some friends recently, I found that was useful? Just something that was totally different from what I normally do, made me feel a bit more "connected" to the things about code that I like.

Not quite the same, but I also love discovering some of the incredibly weird and fucked up ways people use tools: "the new update breaks my bespoke workflow" - "wow I'd never considered that you could possibly have used it that way".
