I haven’t been posting here about the cruise. Started in Singapore; have been to Thailand, Malaysia (Borneo), Philippines, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, & Thailand again. Finish in Singapore on Saturday. Holland America Westerdam. Good weather after dodging a typhoon at the start.

So Mozilla has a new CEO, who is keen to turn Firefox into a “modern AI browser”. Whatever that means, I’m not going there when I leave Google.

This is fucking grim. Somebody invented a white guy, an "IT professional" named Edward Crabtree, who stopped the Bondi shooting and spread it all over the internet, which was picked up by AI agents and slop aggregation sites.

The real hero is a fruit stand owner named Ahmed el Ahmed.

I’m on a cruise ship, currently docked at Bangkok, Thailand. (We left Singapore Sunday evening.) Itinerary change just announced: due to a typhoon headed for central Vietnam, we’re going to Cambodia instead, then on to our planned visits to Borneo and Philippines.

Garbage salad. I’ve been enjoying a lot of it lately. Today’s mix: Oakleaf lettuce, baby spinach, tomato, avocado, roasted butternut pumpkin (squash), roasted Brussels sprouts, mushroom, chicken thigh, sunflower kernels, sliced black olives, quinoa. Dash of balsamic vinegar, salt & pepper.

Dontcha love surveys that ask if you are the decision maker in your household, after establishing that you have a partner who shares the house, without offering the choice of each person makes their own decisions about just about everything? Yeah, me too.

In 2012, I was in Berlin, and I wrote this.
“Wandering through exhibits of the Third Reich & the Soviet occupation, I can see so many of the same tactics happening in the USA, and foresee terrible things happening over the next decade if the intolerant, power-obsessed fringe gain even more power.”

Phrase for the times? "What would Gough do?"

Not, in many cases, what the Australian Labor Party is in fact doing these days.

Written 11 years ago. Still true.

There’s so much computer-related problem-solving stuff I know how to do, and would be successful in doing, and totally am not interested in doing. Yes, once it was an enjoyable challenge; now it’s all a complete PITA.
I wrote this 8 years ago. Even more true now.

Our village has a recycling room, for items including ring pulls, bubble packs (from meds), old tech, eyeglasses & cases, old towels & sheets, etc. Various organizations collect these & use them or pass them on. Outside by the community garden are bins for bottles & cans, batteries, compost.

My credit card statement had a much larger charge than I expected for the AirTrain in Brisbane in July. Checking on this, I discovered that the fare had nearly doubled in February when the half fare trial (started by the previous government) was not extended by the current government.

One of many flower beds at Floriade, Canberra. The taller blooms (tulips?) have various ground cover flowers below them, in similar or contrasting colours.

Canberra. Friday afternoon, having recovered from my morning walk through Floriade, I walked to the light rail stop and rode the train to Gungahlin, out in an area that was undeveloped when I lived here 40 years ago. A quick look around the town centre, then back to Civic on the train.

Canberra. Friday I did Floriade. It’s not just flowers, but that’s the part I’m most interested in. The queue for the ferris wheel wasn’t long, so I rode it. Worth the $12 for the view - in all directions.

They lie. They always lie. Big lies, little lies. Hypocritical lies.
Who are “they”? Just about any group or organisation dominated by rich men who thrive on capitalism and toxic individualism. And, often, white supremacy.

Today marks 51 years since I departed the USA on my way to a new life in Australia. Emigrating was one of the best decisions I ever made. I arrived in mid October, having travelled by cruise ship. I got a bunk in a multi person cabin for the same cost as a flight and could bring lots of luggage.

I watched a video about a women’s health topic. The presenters were one woman, one man. The woman was the main presenter, but I was unsurprised that the man kept interrupting to expand on the topics. In each case, the woman appeared to be within a sentence of saying much the same.

I browsed through the new Apple gadgets online today. Most of my collection are only a year or two old, so I was happy to not be very tempted by any of the new ones. I’ll probably still go into a store and fondle some in the next few weeks, because that’s what I do.
