please be patient. i'm trying very hard to be a person, but it's really difficult for me, and I'm not particularly good at it. there was no tutorial and the rules seem wildly inconsistent.

THE VET, OUR COWS, OUR LIFE After an initial wrong diagnosis and despite our repeated requests, the vet takes months to analyze and treat the problem in our herd. Once all the animals were affected, production fell dramatically, and the treatment we had sought ourselves merely halted the clinical symptoms. The tests without which the vet didn't want to do anything, and which he didn't carry out until 7 months after we alerted him, are negative, but he says they're not always reliable! Why wait for them when there are animals visibly affected? Autopsies on the other hand are positive... We lost €100,000, a hard blow, but we could survive by working even harder for several years and living even more modestly. But then the next year the drought comes and we can no longer afford to buy fodder. We do what we can, filling the hole in our finances left by the vet by digging another hole. The summer drought shows up at the end of winter when stocks are depleted too early: low production, little growth in young animals and early grazing, which again impacts stock levels for the coming winter. So next winter and spring, still low production because still limited stock and young animals not big enough to give milk yet. Little production means no way of filling the hole without making another one, no means of buying additional forage to get out of the vicious circle... The hole dug in our finances by the vet has become our grave..

very small young common toad on blue and black gloved hand. VETERINARIAN'S CHOICE 4 A sick cow is in agony. We call the veterinary clinic as soon as it opens in the morning to euthanize the animal. It's already late afternoon when someone comes... This is the 2nd time in a few months that the clinic has chosen to make an animal suffer because they disagree with us... We no longer trust them. We have to find a solution! But as we're behind with payments to them after their ex-employee caused a health crisis at the farm and cost us €100,000, rural vets being a closed environment, they've talked about it to others (without mentioning that they're the cause of our problems, even though the main person responsible no longer works at the clinic) and we can't change vets until the bills are paid. What can we do?

black and yellow lizard. For us, a “normal” vet is a professional who, when asked to solve a problem, draws up a plan of action and executes it independently. But we have to face the fact that with this veterinary clinic, it doesn't work like that. Every time we ask for an intervention for a problem where a well-defined action is sufficient, such as a caesarean section or the administration of an antibiotic, no worries. But when it comes to persistent problems, arising after their ex-collaborator has caused a health crisis, they come in, say maybe that's it, do an analysis and if they don't find the virus/bacteria/parasite they're looking for, they stop, we're often not even called back (they know we get the results too), there's no follow-up. Are we supposed to call them back after every negative test result and ask for more tests? Finally I make an appointment at the reception desk for a vet to come to the farm to talk about the parasitosis in depth. Already she's having trouble really understanding and figuring out how to write down the subject of the visit I'm requesting. I add that if he has time, the vet can also look at a cow with an abscess. When the day comes, nobody comes. At the end of the afternoon we get a message that there's been an emergency and they're not coming anymore. The next day, one of the vets arrives unexpectedly. He asks after the cow with the abscess, which is not separated from the others since he hasn't announced his visit: cows being gregarious animals, we try not to separate them from the herd if possible. And then I realize that the primary request, to talk about parasitism, hasn't even been understood... Just like when we try to talk about it during other visits, they don't seem to see the problem but just fall into the clichés of the redneck too stupid to know how to manage his herd. They don't really listen to what we say, and since we can't sit down quietly to talk about it...
