One point that I don't think has been made yet, but Rick Atkinson discusses at length in his book (and in Worlds Turned Upside Down) is the problem the British have of projecting power over 3,000 miles of ocean. They just can't fly men and supplies over the Atlantic and reinforce the army. #HATM

Maya Jasanoff comes out swinging -- correctly -- that our imagination of the War for Independence as a revolution of ideals obscures the violence of the war and the horror of those who lived through it. #HATM

@emilysneff.bsky.social's forthcoming book on the Declaration of Independence is really great on the sequence of events and the maneuvering to get a Declaration, and @stevesarson.bsky.social's forthcoming book is great for thinking about the Declaration as a product of British/American history #HATM

The point about GW's desire to lead a "loyal protest" is a concrete example of how most colonists think about the empire, which is as a federal empire with the king at its head and the individual provincial legislatures in control of their own colonies, not Parliament. #HATM

I am sad to share that my position at George Mason University is being eliminated in October. Over the last four years, I've produced over 100 episodes that have explored many different topics and time periods, but always with the same goal: to bring the latest academic research to public audiences.

So much is alternately bananas and enraging and terrifying, but over in my lane I know this. Americans want, in fact crave, real, full, complex histories that reflect the kind of complexity they face daily. Pablum appeals to v few. That's why we do this work. Heading into #July4.
