The cruelty is expressly the point to make people feel powerless and to encourage them to tune out of politics. All the easier to rob the country blind.
The Trump administration might benefit by designating an official "nice person," who would be tasked to say something decent and human at days of national grief. The president himself, first lady, VP, etc. etc. are obviously uninterested/incapable ... but there must be someone?
