August Books Read The Dry Season by Melissa Febos (Memoir, LGBTQ) A woman swears off sex for three months to analyze her relationships. Flashlight by Susan Choi (Korean Fiction) An examination of Korean heritage in Japan, US, and Korea centered around a disappearance. People Like Us by Jason Mott (Fiction) A sort of continuation of the themes from Mott’s Hell of a Book, two authors struggle with their place in the world, one after a school shooting and another after winning a major literary award. Authority by Andrea Long Chu Collected criticisms from the author covering books, movies, and TV. Two new essays focus on the purpose of criticism and authority. There is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America by Brian Goldstone A focus on the working homeless, Goldstone follows several families as they lose their homes. They go from Renting apartments and houses to barely being able to afford an extended stay hotel room. Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer A Truce That is Not Peace by Miriam Toews When Toews is invited to an author festival she is asked, why does she write. This book is her answer ( a bit of a continuation from the previous memoir All My Puny Sorrows) A New New Me by Helen Oyeyemi Klinga has a new personality for every day of the week, but one of them seems intent on eliminating the others.
