I had to look it up for sport. “die hacke” might include mattock forms and, it seems “die Pulaski-Axt” is not uncommon. Adze is “die Queraxt” which is phonetically near “queer ax” in a way that makes sense.

Every domain is full of jargon and highly specific words. When my wife talks to her lawyer friends their language is riddled with things I don’t fully understand

“Valley” even. Come on autocorrect help me out.

In my truck anything that vaguely smells of construction or labor just fits right in. Milwaukee pack out full of explosives? Yeah that scans.

I hadn’t read Altman’s “gentle singularity” until this morning. That dude is very Silicon Vally coded in a way that’s utterly unpalatable to even nerds outside of the SV bubble.

In the benign forms this is easy to grok: debate of ideas, voting, academic review. Rather pedestrian even. But expand that to situations involving violence and it’s weird and uncomfortable quickly. Good mental fodder for my first cup of coffee :)

I really enjoyed that blog post. The thread running through about “conflict is a load-bearing part of society” is widely under appreciated. I suspect if we lower our moral lens and just look at the arc of humanity we’d discover a role played by conflict that is uncomfortable, at best.

That’s an unexpected side effect

So he and I were discussing mattock vs Pulaski. Halligan is just thrown in for fun. I did order a fire break hoe after using one this weekend.

So there’s 25 acre (10 hectares) wooded lot next to us. I finally met the owner and he’s like, “so this may sound weird, but I’ve been thinking about putting bike and walking trails through the woods”

Let me get my mattock!

The most fun of the litter is the Halligan tool which is a firefighter special. Need to fuck a door up? Halligan. Need to knock down a wall? Halligan. Need to shut down a gas meter quickly? Halligan. Need to intimidate your enemies? Halligan. Combine it with a flat head ax and you've got "the irons"

My household is powered by Aleve. After cleaning trails yesterday I came in and immediately hit the bottle. Aleve bottle, that is.

I have moved so many times I threw mine out 10 years ago. But in my head I can still feel that satisfying feeling when they seat in place.

Tonight I hot-wired my slightly larger generator using a car battery for voltage and throttle body cleaner for starting fluid. Keeping it real in the Chicahominy Swamp.
