Thanks for the tip off. 'Trees' in particular is beautiful - I've used it to round of this year's compilation (I did actually buy it, btw. I just use Spotify as a kind of repository): open.spotify.com/playlist/1ri...

The Hack's on it and that's quite good, even if only because, while watching it, for the first time in my life I felt an odd nostalgia for the 2000s. It's not even a decade to which I can attach anything like an identifiable fashion or style, but somehow it conveyed one.

Oh, it wasn't that bad. I was just skint, and the short-term contracts I was taking on were badly paid, dispiriting, and ultimately led nowhere. But I was fit and healthy and I was cycling a lot, which kept my spirits up. Your situation sounds way more stressful than mine ever was.

Another great read. Incidentally, The Field were also the backdrop to a bit of a rough time in my life (although not half as rough as yours, by the sounds of it): embracethemargin.blogspot.com/2018/04/line...

I don't think anybody growing up in the 1970s and '80s is either completely ignorant nor disinterested in what happened in Northern Ireland. You couldn't be - it was on the news all the time.

I've just recently finished the book, and I would recommend it highly.

That time period IS my twenties. Quite a few on there that featured on the playlists I made back then. I could suggest others that aren't, but you've got to draw a lime somewhere...

I prefer that too, but it doesn't yield enough material on its own. I don't think music journalism is objective as it once was, and some of my friends have stagnated in their listening habits - or they'll recommend something but by the time I've got home I'll have forgotten what.

Listening to the algorithmic music on Spotify is a bit like shopping in TK Maxx: more often than not it doesn't lead to anything, but every now and then you stumble upon a gem. (I don't pay for it or use it for that anyhow.)
