A drone image I acquired earlier today (2025-11-06) while trying out some experimental survey equipment near Menlo just north of #Galway city. In foreground is Menlo Castle (in ruins) and the Corrib River. University of Galway campus and Galway city is in the back ground.

@cmdr-hadfield.bsky.social a slight aside on your visit to Ireland: I've been searching night time ISS astronaut photography on NASA's database (light pollution research). I see there was a bunch of photos of Galway on 2013-04-12. The metadata does not include photographer. Curious, was that you?

I was looking through some night time photos from the International Space Station (ISS) recently. This image from 2022 caught my eye: what (I think) you can see here is the phased transition from the old sodium vapor street lamps (orange) to LEDs (white). Image ISS066-E-122202

"wget is not a crime" ('Jason Bourne' 2016 movie). I didn't spot that on my first viewing.

The Russian Doll packaging of AliExpress: gadgets in cases in boxes in bubble wrap in padded envelopes in plastic bags all bagged together in outer bag. (Multiple small orders all consolidated into one local courier shipment). Impressive logistics if a little wasteful on packaging.

Very 8 bit, but it's kinda annoying that it's 17x17 tiles.

What happened here?! No sign of mechanical damage. Water ingress? Over heating?

A mostly successful mouse repair. The scroll wheel shaft broke, so I improvised a new one by 3D printing a wheel and using a cocktail stick as the shaft. The hardest part of these repairs is figuring how to open it without destroying it. This one wasn't easy.

Tree damage areas are a little easier to see in this false color digital surface model (red means higher of the ground).

A comparison of drone ortho imagery taken in winter 2023 vs today (2025-01-29) highlighting the damage by #StormÉowyn

A 360° panorama (equirectangular projection) at 80m above ground at Merlin Woods (Merlin Park) Galway.

A crude analysis of the tree damage done by #StormÉowyn from the Sentinel-2 satellite. The two alternating images were taken on 2025-01-07 and 2025-01-24. It's from the Near IR band as this offered the most contrast. Damage to Merlin College roof is also noticeable.

I took the drone out today to start a survey of the damage done to Merlin Woods in Galway (53.2798,-8.99317) due to #StormÉowyn. It was too windy for a full survey but I captured some videos and panoramas.

I took delivery this morning of a UM980 precision GNSS receiver that can utilize the Galileo HAS (High Accuracy Service). Static antenna test with HAS on (purple) and HAS off (green) below. I was expecting a bigger difference, but I haven't explored all the settings / antenna options yet.

Sunset over #Galway Bay from above the clouds (a fog bank to be more accurate!). The timelapse video is taken at 120m altitude above ground with a DJI Mini 3 Pro on 2024-11-27.

A view of #Galway city and bay from Doughiska this morning. We had a light dusting of snow last night. Taken from a drone at 120m altitude.
