JD Carpentieri
@jdcarpentieri.bsky.social
Assoc Prof of Social Science & Policy at UCL. The damage I have done to the UK is incalculable.
Out of a class of roughly 200, our local very socio-economically mixed SE London state school sent six or seven kids to Oxbridge last year

Love how that middle box only has "If yes" options

We’ll stop doing it when my daughter asks us to, but she’s in her first year of uni and is happy with it still. We all check it occasionally – it allows us to feel closer to each other without interrupting

We do it too. It’s the sort of thing that can be malevolent or benevolent depending on how well the family gets along. We check it occasionally & it’s always along the lines of “Oh X is in the park right now, must be walking the dog. How fun.” It helps us feel closer without interrupting

Possibly my most disappointing social media based discovery is that tons of “progressives” get the horn for being mall security guards

I believe I speak for all when i say we don’t want any of those states, you’re really going to have to up your offer

Sorry you’re experiencing this. Personally I’m having a great year. Some of my Year 1s use AI a bit more than I’d like & read a bit less than I’d like, but on the whole there’s a critical mass of students who are v highly engaged. This is true for many of my colleagues (UK)

Same for me — best term ever

@stephenbush In my class we spend a lot of time on the purposes of uni, consumerist vs coproducer orientations to uni, etc. several of my students have argued that because they’re paying so much for it they try to get more (learning) out of it. Eg why skip class if you’re paying for it?

Nice move. I absolutely hate how popular these doomer threads are — it’s a sickness

Personally, I think people should be more focused on index funds (and renting) and less on homeownership, especially when they’re younger. But British cultural norms push very strongly in the opposite direction, as you say

Personally I’m having a very positive classroom experience this year. Some of my Year 1 UGs are using AI a little more than I’d like and reading a little less than I’d like, but on the whole there is a critical mass of students who are highly engaged with the course content

@equusonthebuses.bsky.social I’m also having a positive classroom experience this year. Some of my Year 1 UGs are using AI a little more than I’d like and reading a little less than I’d like, but on the whole there is a critical mass of students who are highly engaged with the course content

I’m pro the long-term stock approach, but I think this is a very fair critique. If someone in their early 20s knows they’re going to want to make a mortgage downpayment by age 30, they probably don’t want to risk a market trough

Several of my Chinese students have told me this. Relatedly, they tell me that if their degree is not from a top 100 university (QS rankings) large firms‘ HR departments won’t even look at their CV. I’m not sure if this is exactly true or if it only captures the broader gist of how things work

I’d go for “Imagine the person you are interacting with is in the same room with you and you are talking to each other face-to-face.”
