Male Gambel's quail (Callipepla gambelii)

The Callipepla gambelii birds are easily recognized by their top knots and scaly plumage on their undersides. Gambel's quail have bluish-gray plumage on much of their bodies, and males have copper feathers on the top of their heads, black faces, and white stripes above their eyes. Bird photography.

Group hike in the Organ Mountains. This was in Bar Canyon, which, confusingly, is in the Soledad Canyon Day Use Area near Las Cruces, NM, USA.
A guide from the Friends of the Organ Mountains explains the history of the stone house in the canyon. Remnants of the stone house A chasmophytic tree found a way to live up there. Maple trees are rare in New Mexico, but sometimes they can be found in places like these. This is Acer grandidentatum (Bigtooth Maple).

Photo showing deformed rick strata at the southern end of the Robledo Mountains, on the west side of the Rio Grande Rift. Several different kinds of rock can be found in this deep arroyo. This rock layer has been eroded by periodic water flows as well as high winds. This is a gnarled bit of juniper wood.

The eastern half of the long adobe dwelling has been fixed up, and is occupied. The western half still needs work.
