People shaped Europe’s #ecosystems long before farming
🦣#Megafauna effects on #vegetation openness dropped from 77%→57% bt #Eemian & #Mesolithic
🧑‍🦱Mesolithic people shaped up to 47% of landscapes w Neanderthals affecting 6–14%

Debating the aesthetics of #wind & #solar is a luxury. The real crisis is climate change—threatening billions with deadly heat & catastrophic ecosystem breakdowns ♨️🥵🔥 Green #energy is a necessity🍃 Challenges exist (noise, land use) but are manageable - biggest risk is inaction #dkpol #climatechange

Danish #megafauna -a big bull elk (#moose) from postglacial Funen (Broholm castle). The extirpation of elk from temperate Europe was part of a broader human-driven loss of large-bodied #mammals across the #Holocene, as we recently showed: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... 🫎🫎🏹 #extinction

Why did some #megafauna survive? 🦣🦘🦌
Our new study shows #extinction risk was higher for larger, flat-footed, island species— and lower for those closely related to tropical African/Asian fauna, likely filtered by earlier human impacts 👣🍖

New in @pnas.org we assess future #climate exposure for 32,089 species of #trees🌳
🔹69% face unprecedented climates in ≥10% of range
🔹In taiga & Amazonia >50% of local tree diversity exposed
🔹 31% of species retain >90% of range in stable climates -> important climate refugia♨️

Tracking bison in the southern Carpathians, I saw this beautiful #butterfly: scarce fritillary- which lives in sunny semi-open tree-rich landscapes (common on evolutionary time scales) & is extinct/highly endangered in NW Europe due to intensive agriculture and forestry 🦋☀️🌳🌼 #extinction #rewilding
