The kids of today who are reading excerpts of books for class are probably reading more than most of my classmates did.

Hate to disappoint people who want to gripe about Kids These Days, but even in the seventies, when I went to high school, almost nobody read the books. All the local bookstores would get the high school English syllabus and put the Cliff Notes booklets for them right behind the bestseller section.
