A recent visit to a sage-grouse lek reminded me that grouse numbers have seriously declined for at least the last 30 years, largely due to habitat loss and degradation. They now face a full-frontal assault thanks to the greed and antipathy to natural resources of the Trump administration.

While photographing waterfowl this week I reflected on how so many of these birds are dependent on federal wildlife refuges and waterfowl protection areas. With Trump’s assault on federal agencies and federal lands I can’t help but wonder if my grandchildren will be able to enjoy these same sights.

The importance of sagebrush to species like sage grouse and pygmy rabbits is well known. The shrub’s value to other wildlife is often overlooked. Here sagebrush provides winter cover for pheasants and hiding cover and browse for mule deer in southern Idaho.

Tried ice fishing but the fish wouldn’t cooperate. Fortunately, I had a plan B and the wildlife viewing was great. Nice to be out on a cold, sunny day.
