Sometimes I wonder if people think "oh, we're the 3rd most populous country in the world, we must not be that far behind India/China"

according to my *very accurate* google search earlier, Taiwan is ~3 times the size of Jamaica? and the CMR is taller too, I believe.

I'm not sure whether anyone's quantified the 3-D size of a mountainous island needed to deflect a TC's track, but if it persists, that could be a contributing factor (among others).

probably one of the more intense ones I've seen? maybe because it's so shallow?
