In my view, the zombie argument is among the weakest in philosophy, as it commits a petitio principii fallacy: by hypothesizing that an exact duplicate of a functional human being could lack consciousness, one is already presupposing the falsity of physicalism.

#Consciousness may be an illusion and yet still possess ethical significance!

Being anti-scientific is not only always problematic but also highly dangerous in today’s society. If something has not yet been sufficiently explained by #science (like #consciousness), it simply means we need more science—not less. #philsci #philmind #philosophy

Regardless of one’s stance, it is crucial to acknowledge that this work concerns anti-scientific theories of consciousness (a point the author seems to concede). Those positions today hold the same level of scientific relevance as flat-Earth theories, astrology and psychoanalysis.

Very much enjoying @heddamorch.bsky.social's guide to non-physicalist theories of consciousness. Phenomenally clear, ideal for teaching, and you can Russell up a free PDF copy at www.cambridge.org/core/element...

Even though U.S. #democracy is highly criticizable (now deemed imperfect by most philosophers and political scientists), it remains a democracy. The latest #Wisconsin election proves this. When #leftists like #Marxists fight to overthrow #Western democracies, they empower figures like Trump, Musk...

The most critical thing in #argumentation is not inference, facts or concepts, but #ethical issues: understanding the other's position in good faith (try to present it in a way the other would agree with) and being open to changing your own position. Without it, argumentation is meaningless #philsky

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

When someone defends a #pseudoscience it is usually not the only pseudoscience they believe in, as it usually comes from a poor understanding of #science (or purely science denialism), so almost anything goes. For example, today #marxism and #psychoanalysis usually go hand in hand. #philsci #philsky

There is a lot of confusion on social media about China's #economy. The impressive economic growth of China didn't come from the implementation of a #Marxist economy, but rather from distancing itself from it and adopting a certain form of state #capitalism and policies more focused on market trades

Garbage in Garbage out. “A recent analysis by NewsGuard showed that Russia was able to ‘infect’ Western AI tools with its propaganda. The top 10 chatbots, like ChatGPT-4.o from OpenAI, Copilot from Microsoft, and others, use Russian disinformation sources for analysis.”

A lot of confusion in political discussions on social media. In summary "democracy" is when the majority of the population elects its leaders. A "republic" is when the powers of the republic are separated, and a "dictatorship" is when the powers are consolidated under a single command #philsky

Science denialism extends beyond flat-earthers and anti-vaxxers, infiltrating fields like #history, #economics and #philosophy. For instance, #marxism does not meet today's scientific standards in any aspect, and even Lakatos, once a Marxist/Stalinist, later questioned its scientific status. #phisci

Fighting science denialism, pseudoscience, and anti-empiricism has profound practical consequences, as it addresses not only disasters like this but also misinformation, errors, and ideological propaganda in fields such as #economics, #history and #philosophy shaping education and society as a whole

Since antiquity there are known kinds of legitimate arguments called 'arguments from authority' but there are wrong arguments called 'fallacies of authority.' Getting rid of experts is nonsensical because of the advancement of science. Instead we need better training in argument evaluation!

It is a common mistake to say that the social sciences are not empirical in the same way as the natural sciences, due to a supposed "fundamental difference in objects." There are studies in the social sciences that are empirical, and there are also pseudoscientific approaches #philsky #humanities
