My @bostonglobe.com column this week features Hester Kaplan, whose book about her father blends biography, memoir, and craft class. I really enjoyed it! www.bostonglobe.com/2025/10/09/a...

Growing up in a book-filled Cambridge house, the middle daughter of two successful writers, it is unsurprising that Hester Kaplan became a writer herself.

Happy Publication Day to TWICE BORN by Hester Kaplan !!

"Hester Kaplan does with memoir what her acclaimed father Justin did with biography—finds the right subject, makes it new, and teaches us how to write with great compassion and grace." —Annie Dillard. @catapultbooks.bsky.social

can't get this opening line out of my head "we swim in oceans of quackery" -- a sentence that could take you almost anywhere -- in this case, it's to a book review that also includes the phrase "jibber-jabber" and heralds a book I'd like to read

Any day that downtown St Paul looks "promising" is a day to repost. Let the hype become the truth!
Downtown St Paul looking promising today: Pino’s pizza soon to open on the street level; 7th Place farmers market; Palace Pub open; reconstructing the formerly terrible Hamm’s Plaza.

Name tag from last nights pro-democracy letter-writing event. I hope he wins, and serves NYC with strength, compassion, and capability. The reality would be hugely challenging. But whatever the future holds, may it bring us more generational change, because that is the salvation we really need.
