Expecting the people being sacrificed in the name of outreach to "moderates" to act rationally and not emotionally is somewhat ridiculous. "You are the price we are choosing to pay. Please say thanks (also we PROMISE this is the last time we'll use you as our bargauning chip. Red line from now on)"

I found the RTD 1 era and Moffat era fairly distinct (RTD focused on the companion and was more messy, Moffat on the doctor, and more serialized fairy tale). The production style carried over, if that's what you mean.
