RIP Igor Palmin, photographer of Soviet life both over- and underground and chronicler of late socialism in a quiet yet piercing manner. I did a podcast for the Barbican in 2018, where his work was part of the Another Kind of Life exhibition.

We had a famous visitor at the institute. We did our best to make sure that Ukraine would remain on his mind - and possibly more. He then stumbled into our Europast summer school - to the horror of his security detail. Time will tell if our pleas for more funding for Ukr. researchers will be heard.

Now in the Kreisky Forum in Vienna. The times are bleak. The women are smart. Franziska Davies dissects recent events. Fazit: terrible as it is, we now face the reality of possible scenarios we knew for many months. Neither suits nor ties nor apologies altered or will alter the course of events.

Yesterday a year ago our friend and colleague Jan Plamper died after a long illness. He, his wit, generosity and clear-headed yet compassionate judgment are much missed. Every day really. His books survive him but cannot replace his warm friendship and intellectual companionship.

It is already a few weeks ago that I wandered through Kyiv on a beautiful autumn day. It was reassuring to see that everything was still there - archive, coffee shops, good food, people. Olha had got a new best since I saw her last.

What is left of history? Looking forward to my cameo appearance at the Cottbus Festival of East European Film. And refreshing to see German films classified as East European. Gives a new perspective.
